The Capability Gap

Purpose and mission are essential for the progress of a team. They serve as a compass, providing direction and clarity.

Without a clear purpose and vision, teams can struggle to find their way forward. They can find it challenging to prioritise when faced with competing demands. It is crucial to set a strong foundation by defining the purpose and vision and ensuring that every team member understands and connects with them in their own way.

With a clear sense of purpose, teams are more motivated to work together towards a common goal, making informed decisions quickly and effectively with their ‘north star’ in mind.

Purpose and Vision Board

Create a vision to get on board with
A picture paints a thousand words and in the case of purpose and vision, imagery can be a starting point for identifying shared ideas, themes and emotions for a team.

Participants select images to evoke a vision of who they hope to be as a team. The compilation of these different pictures becomes a team image with symbolic meaning. Rather than relying on cognitive processes, we allow participants space to use their creativity to imagine an aspirational future.

Purpose Statement

Create a statement with meaning
Writing a purpose statement allows participants to gain clarity, set a direction, stay motivated, make informed decisions, collaborate authentically, and communicate effectively.

Participants answer questions to establish their ‘reason for being’ as a team within the organisation.

This process aids the flow of ideas so the team can generate a concise purpose statement that speaks to them individually and collectively.

Moon-shot

Reaching for the skies
Knowing the direction of travel once the compass is set is fundamental for a team to be able to get to where it needs to be.

In this exercise the team starts to consider skills, actions and attitudes needed to make the shift from the current reality to aspirational future.
